Understanding the progression of painting skills from EYFS to Year 6

This Art and design teacher skills video explores how painting skills develop progressively from EYFS to Year 6. It explains how children move from playful exploration and experimentation with paint in the early years to increasingly purposeful, controlled and expressive painting as they progress through primary school. The video introduces key areas of development, including brush control, paint application, tools, materials, techniques and colour.

The video explores how pupils build on early experiences of mark making, colour mixing and brush handling to develop more sophisticated techniques, including layering, blending, creating tints and shades and using colour to create atmosphere. It also explains how Kapow Primary’s painting progression supports teachers in recognising developing skills and planning appropriate learning opportunities. Throughout, the emphasis is on building teachers’ subject knowledge and confidence in supporting technical development, creativity and artistic independence across the primary years.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Art and design painting videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge as they help children explore creative techniques and express their ideas through art.
