Different ways to build tone

This Art and design teacher video supports the teaching of Year 4 Painting and mixed media: Light and dark. The video demonstrates how children can experiment with different painting techniques to create tone and shows how artists use paint in different ways to achieve a range of effects.

The video provides guidance on selecting suitable objects for observation and modelling the activity. Teachers are shown how children can explore tone using smooth blending, thicker applications of paint and expressive brushwork while developing their understanding of highlights, shadows and midtones.

Practical tips are included throughout, including working from light tints to dark shades, cleaning tools between colours and encouraging experimentation rather than focusing on a polished final outcome.

This video supports Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Painting and mixed media: Light and dark unit and helps teachers prepare children to explore tone confidently through observation and painting
