Welcoming a new baby
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It explores how babies are welcomed in different religions and worldviews.
Many families hold special ceremonies to celebrate a new baby. Christians might have a baptism, using water and a candle to welcome the baby into the Church. Muslim families may say a prayer in the baby’s ear and hold a meal called Aqiqah. Some Hindus perform naming ceremonies with blessings and sweet food. Jewish families may have a Brit Milah or Brit Bat to welcome babies into their community. Non-religious families might hold a naming ceremony with poems, songs or gifts. These celebrations all show love, care and belonging.
