Testing different soils

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. In this activity, you will test how much water different types of soil can hold. First, choose one soil sample each and put it into a coffee filter, gently patting it flat. When the timer starts, slowly pour a cup of water into the soil. When the timer stops, quickly remove the filter and place it in a plastic tray.

Next, use a permanent marker to label your cup with the soil type. Finally, line up all the cups in order, from the soil that held the most water to the soil that held the least. This will help you compare how the properties of different soils affect water retention.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, key stage 2, Year 3, Materials: Rocks and soil, Lesson 5: Soil formation
