The o sound in French
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. It introduces pupils to the French vowel sound made by the letter o when it appears in the middle of a word, such as in gomme, orange, or docteur. Pupils learn that this is the same as the English short o sound, as in “hot,” but not when the letter o is at the end of a word.
The video continues by guiding pupils through mouth mechanics: filling the cheeks softly and shaping the lips to release a round o sound. Pupils are then challenged to listen carefully and count how many times they hear the sound in example phrases, before checking together. A key learning point is noticing that words like Thomas or piano do not contain this sound at the end, helping children to distinguish when o is silent and when it is pronounced. The video ends by encouraging pupils to recall and collect other French words they know that contain the short o sound, building confidence in recognising and pronouncing it in their own speaking.
