French sound double l

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow French scheme of work. Today we’re exploring a new sound in French and seeing how it’s written. Listen carefully to spot the sound – it’s the short “y” sound, just like when we begin to say “yes” in English.

In French, this sound often appears when the letter i comes before a double l. For example, in the word “fille” (girl) or “juillet” (July). But not every double l makes this sound. For instance, “belle” just has the normal l sound. Try practising the sound with me: keep it short and sharp – “y”. Now, see if you can spot it in other words. Remember, it’s the i before the double l that makes the difference.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of French, key stage 2, Year 3, Unit 6: A circle of life in French, Lesson 3: Life cycle French detectives
