Abraham’s family and God’s promise

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It introduces Abraham – known as Avraham in Hebrew and Ibrahim in Arabic – and explores why he is important to several religions.

Pupils learn that Abraham is a key figure in the Jewish, Christian and Muslim worldviews, often called the Abrahamic religions. These religions believe Abraham made a covenant, or sacred promise, with God. The story tells of his wife Sarah, who laughed when she was promised a child in her old age. First, Abraham had a son called Ishmael with a woman named Hagar, and later Sarah gave birth to Isaac. Both sons are important in religious stories, and many people from these worldviews believe they are descended from either Ishmael or Isaac. This video helps pupils understand how one story can connect different beliefs.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Religion and worldviews, Upper key stage 2, Year 6, Why does religion look different around the world? (Part 1), Lesson 1: How do some religions believe in the same God?
