There are no unit quizzes within Kapow RSE & PSHE. The assessment focuses on a balance of skills, knowledge and application. Pupils demonstrate learning through the open-ended Knowledge catcher and ongoing formative assessment within lessons.

The Knowledge catcher supports assessment by capturing pupils’ prior learning, lived experiences and links to other curriculum areas.

Complete it before teaching the unit or during the first lesson. It is then revisited in the final lesson of the unit. Pupils add to or adapt their original responses in a different colour so that progress and developing understanding are clearly visible.

Pupils may record ideas in different ways, including drawing, writing, oral responses, role-play or small-group discussion. Choose approaches that support inclusion and participation. Some pupils may benefit from working in small groups.

Explain that there are no right or wrong answers. Responses such as ‘I do not know yet’ or ‘I’m not sure’ are valid. Pupils demonstrate progress by comparing their end-of-unit responses with their starting point. This is known as ipsative feedback, where progress is measured against a pupil’s own previous work.

Pupils draw a smiley, straight or sad face in the first circle of each section to show their level of confidence at the start of the unit. They repeat this self-assessment in the second circle at the end of the unit.

The small square in each box is used only in the final lesson to indicate where a pupil required additional prompting or reminders. This supports evaluation of confidence and understanding.
