Unit overview: Significant places

This Religions and Worldviews video supports you to guide pupils through the unit ‘Why are some places in the world significant?’. The unit explores the idea of significant places and journeys, helping children understand the concepts of sacred, holy, pilgrimage, and significance. Pupils investigate places such as the River Ganges, the Harmandir Sahib, Jerusalem and Buddhist stupas, learning why people from different worldviews may choose to visit them.

Through scripture, personal accounts, and historical context, children explore beliefs from Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Sikh, Hindu, Buddhist and non-religious perspectives. The video encourages an enquiry-based approach using disciplinary lenses such as history, geography, anthropology and literature. You’ll also find guidance for handling sensitive questions, addressing misconceptions, and supporting inclusive, respectful dialogue.
