Anglo-Saxon Britain: invasion and change
In this unit overview History video, teachers are introduced to the key developments in Britain from AD 410 to 1066, with a focus on the Anglo-Saxon period. The video explains the reasons for Anglo-Saxon invasions, including the Roman withdrawal, pressure from other tribes and environmental challenges in Northern Europe. It explores the establishment of kingdoms, hierarchical societies, changes in settlement patterns and the spread of Christianity through missionary efforts. The impact of Viking invasions and the resulting shifts in political power are also examined. Historical sources, including the burial at Sutton Hoo and the reign of King Alfred, are used to support children’s understanding of change and continuity.
As part of Kapow Primary’s Britain series, the video equips teachers to support children in exploring migration, settlement, religious change and leadership in Anglo-Saxon society.
