Exploring calypso music and history

This Music video introduces teachers to the second unit of the Key stage 2 instrumental scheme, based on the music of the Caribbean. It begins by using the song Calypso Queen by Calypso Rose to spark discussion before moving on to the history and features of calypso. Pupils learn how calypso singers often adopt warrior-like names, listen to the contrasting songs of Lord Kitchener, and consider how his experiences highlight themes such as migration and racial injustice. These wider conversations encourage pupils to connect music with social history and modern issues.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It provides structured support for introducing the origins, context, and key features of calypso, while gradually preparing pupils to sing the specially written topic song What’s the Story. The combination of guided listening, discussion prompts, and accessible teaching strategies ensures teachers feel equipped to explore both the cultural significance and musical elements of calypso in the classroom.
