Threading large sewing needles and making stitches in embroidery fabric

In this Design and technology video, teachers are guided through the process of modelling how to thread a large-eyed needle with wool and to make a row of stitches in embroidery fabric.

The video demonstrates to pupils how to hold wool near its end and push it through the eye of a large plastic sewing needle, providing suggestions on how to guide them through common mistakes during this step. The video then demonstrates how to push the needle through a hole in the embroidery fabric, tape a short tail to the back and then reinsert the needle through a different hole to create a single stitch. Finally, the video demonstrates how to continue this process to create a row of stitches, known as a running stitch. Each step is shown slowly and clearly for the teacher so they can model this for the pupils in the classroom.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Design and technology videos, which enable teachers and pupils to explore and make their own products.
