Learning final gumboots ostinato

This Music video introduces teachers to lesson three of the South Africa unit, focusing on the gumboots musical tradition and learning the final ostinato to complete the song. The video demonstrates how pupils can sing and clap rhythmic patterns before transferring them onto instruments, using staff notation to support transitions between old and new ostinati. It also highlights ways to challenge confident pupils with a more demanding baseline part.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It provides step-by-step guidance for teaching pupils to combine rhythmic and harmonic parts securely, gradually building towards whole-class performance. Teachers are encouraged to rehearse with the guide track and adapt tasks for differentiation, ensuring all learners are engaged and prepared to add vocals and rhythmic ostinato in the next lesson.
