Sculptures with powerful words

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to a sculpture project inspired by Nigerian-born artist Sokari Douglas Camp, whose welded metal figures often carry political messages. It encourages Key stage 2 pupils to reflect on school life and choose a single word that represents an attribute they value in others. The video demonstrates each stage, from designing and cutting block letters from cardboard to assembling them on ribbons, painting them black, and photographing pupils with their words as part of the final sculptural display.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original LKS2 Art and design resources. It supports teachers in guiding pupils to explore identity, values, and creative expression, while developing design and making skills through sculpture and display inspired by Douglas Camp’s bold and meaningful artworks.
