Mastering tone through shading

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help Key stage 2 pupils develop their shading techniques. It recaps the four rules of shading and shows how pupils can apply these to create smooth, neat tones that blend from dark to light. The video demonstrates practical strategies such as shading in one direction, turning the paper for cleaner edges, and using a finger or tissue to blend tones effectively.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original LKS2 Art and design resources. It simplifies the process, helping teachers guide pupils with patience and precision so they can confidently illustrate tone by shading.
