Adding improvisation to calypso

This Music video introduces teachers to the final lesson in the Caribbean topic, focusing on improvisation within the song What’s the Story Calypso. The lesson begins with an experiment to show why improvisation needs rules, before pupils improvise using the pentatonic scale notes C, D, E, G, and A. The video explores strategies for supporting pupils to develop rhythmic interest and extend improvisations over longer sections, making use of the demo track as a model for performance.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It supports teachers in preparing for a full performance of the calypso song. It offers guidance on structuring roles within the final ensemble, including singers, improvisers, and percussionists, and encourages flexible groupings so every pupil can take part. Teachers are supported to feel confident in balancing freedom with structure to achieve an exciting, authentic performance.
