Colour mixing with Van Gogh

This archived Art and design scheme of work video introduces teachers to the skills needed to help Key stage 2 pupils mix and apply colours to textured collages inspired by Van Gogh. It explores how to observe and replicate a wide variety of shades, guiding pupils to experiment with mixing primary colours alongside black and white to achieve accurate tones. The video demonstrates each step, from analysing Van Gogh’s painting and testing colours on scrap paper to applying them carefully with brushes or sponges on different collage textures.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s original KS1 Art and design resources. It supports teachers in building pupils’ confidence with colour mixing, precision, and perseverance, ensuring they can develop both technical skill and artistic appreciation.
