Exploring Steve Reich minimalism

This Music video introduces teachers to minimalist composer Steve Reich and shows how his work connects with the tuned percussion piece Interlocking patterns. The lesson builds directly on the previous session, guiding pupils to identify Reich’s influence on the music they are learning and to experience how overlapping and shifting patterns create minimalist textures.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It demonstrates how to teach tune 2 of Interlocking patterns, where two vocal and instrumental lines overlap and gradually shift out of sync. With clear modelling, call-and-response practice, and group rehearsal, teachers are supported to help pupils secure their parts and understand the interlocking effect.
