Introducing minimalism through singing
This Music video introduces teachers to the first lesson in our North American minimalism unit. Pupils are introduced to the key features of minimalist music, including ostinato, layered textures, interlocking rhythms, and simple harmonies. Through guided listening, discussion, and singing, the class will begin to understand how minimalism sounds in practice, building the skills to recognise and perform these features.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It prepares teachers to model and lead the interlocking patterns song, teaching pupils to sing in two overlapping parts and develop their awareness of structure, texture, and repetition. This secure foundation will support their progression into later lessons, where they explore the music of Philip Glass and develop tuned percussion performance.
