Investigating how temperature affects dissolving

This Science video introduces teachers to a Year 5 investigation into how temperature impacts the rate at which sugar dissolves in water. The lesson begins with a demonstration using sweets on a plate and hot water to spark curiosity before pupils plan their own fair test. The focus is on identifying variables to change, measure, and control, and ensuring accurate timing and measurements. Children will observe and record how the time taken for sugar cubes or measured sugar granules to dissolve changes at different water temperatures.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Science – investigating. It supports teachers in guiding pupils to carry out controlled comparative tests, reinforcing key planning skills and helping them draw conclusions based on their observations. The investigation also prompts pupils to think critically about the relationship between temperature and dissolving, building towards more complex enquiries later in the unit.
