Missionaries and Christianity in Britain
In this History video, teachers are supported in introducing the key figures and developments in the spread of Christianity across Anglo-Saxon Britain and parts of what is now Scotland.
The video explains how Christianity declined after the Roman withdrawal and how pagan beliefs resurged, before missionaries such as Columba, Augustine and Aidan reintroduced the faith and established centres like Iona, Canterbury and Lindisfarne. It highlights the influence of royal conversions in promoting wider acceptance of Christianity and the gradual reach of religion into rural communities. Historical narratives are used to support children’s understanding of religious change, continuity and the long-term legacy of the early Church.
As part of Kapow Primary’s Anglo-Saxon Britain resources, the video equips teachers to explore the spread of Christianity and the role of missionaries in shaping early British society.
