Missionaries and Christianity in Britain
This History video introduces teachers to the key figures and developments in the spread of Christianity across Anglo-Saxon Britain and parts of what is now Scotland. It outlines the religious shift that occurred after the Roman withdrawal in the early fifth century, when Christianity began to decline and pagan beliefs resurged. The video explores the role of missionaries – Columba, Augustine and Aidan – in reintroducing Christianity, each establishing centres of faith such as Iona, Canterbury and Lindisfarne. It highlights how royal conversions were key to influencing wider society, and how religion gradually reached rural communities over time.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s History scheme – religion. It supports teachers in delivering historically grounded content about religious change and continuity, providing clear narratives around missionary work, Christian foundations in Britain, and the long-term legacy of the early Church.
