Exploring the gamelan slendro scale

This Music video introduces teachers to the musical features of Gamelan, focusing on the Slendro scale and how it links to the pentatonic scale. Pupils will explore the scale notes (A, C, D, E and G), learn to sing using note numbers as Indonesian children do, and practise the melody of the unit song Blue Sky. The lesson also introduces the idea of different versions of the same note and gives pupils the chance to hear what an octave sounds like before it is formally taught. Teachers are guided in supporting children to sing comfortably within their range, with practical tips for managing higher and lower notes.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It supports the unit on Gamelan. It provides clear demonstrations, vocal tips, and strategies for building pupils’ confidence in pitch and scale work, ensuring teachers feel prepared to introduce cultural context while developing safe and accurate singing techniques.
