Fairground wheels and axles

This Design and technology scheme of work video introduces teachers to a creative Kapow Primary unit for Year 2, in which the children design and build fairground wheels. It builds on prior knowledge of wheels, axles and stable structures while encouraging responses to a design brief linked to the local area.

The video provides step-by-step guidance for modelling, scaffolding and adapting the activity for all learners. Teachers are supported through the important processes such as planning labelled diagrams, constructing wheels from recycled materials and testing different axle setups. The children are guided to consider safety, scale and identity in their designs. Opportunities for reflection, peer comparison and practical problem solving help to develop resilience and critical thinking.
