Creating cyclic Gamelan patterns

This Music video introduces teachers to exploring cyclic patterns in lesson four of the Indonesia topic. Pupils will recap the key features of Gamelan music, including the use of the Slendro scale, octave variation, note length, and repeating cyclical structures, before creating their own eight-note melodies. Working in pairs, they will use staff notation, experiment with pitch order, and practise their ideas on tuned percussion to prepare for performance.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It supports teachers in guiding pupils to apply their knowledge of notation and scales creatively. It shows how to scaffold independent composition, challenge confident learners with variations, and prepare the class for developing their Gamelan piece further in the next lesson.
