Singing and rhythm in gumboots

This Music video introduces teachers to combining singing and rhythmic ostinato patterns as part of the South Africa unit. Pupils will warm up with call and response gumboot rhythms and swooping vocal sounds before focusing on good singing technique. They then learn the rhythmic ostinato for “Put on your gumboots” and practise fitting it with the chorus, gradually building towards performing both rhythm and vocals together.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music scheme – notes. It demonstrates how to balance singing, rhythm, and harmony within the same piece. With opportunities for differentiation and group work, it helps teachers to prepare pupils for a final gumboot dance performance that integrates all elements of the song.
