Creating abstract sculptures

This Art and design scheme of work video supports a lesson where pupils create abstract sculptures based on their own designs.

The video reinforces that the children’s sketchbook plans should guide the process of creating abstract sculptures, but changes are natural as pupils problem solve and adapt. It highlights the importance of giving pupils time to experiment with shape, structure and joining techniques as they bring their ideas to life. Tips are included for setting up the classroom to maximise workspace and access to materials. There are also suggestions for managing drying time, storing work between lessons, and adapting the activity if keeping large sculptures isn’t practical.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 3 Abstract shape and space unit. It gives practical strategies to support pupils as they explore scale, form and construction in a hands-on, collaborative way.
