Developing algorithms and debugging
This Computing video introduces teachers to how pupils build on their Year 1 learning by using more precise computing vocabulary. It explains how pupils move from describing instructions to understanding algorithms as sets of commands that control a computer or robot, and introduces the term bugs to describe errors in code.
Teachers are supported in helping the pupils understand that debugging is the process of finding and fixing bugs, and that algorithms must be in the correct sequence, include all necessary steps and be clear enough for a computer to follow. The video also highlights how pupils develop these skills through both unplugged and on-screen activities, including using coding platforms to design, test and improve their own algorithms.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Computing – Year 2 videos, which enable teachers and pupils to develop their digital skills, explore key computing concepts and create their own digital projects.
