Forgiveness on Yom Kippur

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It explores how many Jewish people observe Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement. This is a time for reflection, saying sorry to God and others, and seeking forgiveness. It’s seen by many as the holiest day of the year and is marked with prayer, fasting, and special traditions.

The story of the first Yom Kippur goes back to Moses receiving the Ten Commandments. After the people worshipped an idol, Moses asked God for forgiveness, and a second set of tablets was given. Today, Jewish people wear white, fast for twenty-five hours, and spend time in the synagogue. Yom Kippur ends with the sound of the shofar and often a joyful meal to break the fast, giving thanks for a fresh start

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Religion and worldviews, key stage 2, Year 3, What happens if we do wrong? Lesson 3: How do some people seek God’s forgiveness?
