How to write lyrics

This Music video introduces Year 6 pupils to the process of writing song lyrics that communicate a clear message. It explores how songwriters carefully select words to inspire, encourage and connect with listeners, considering the purpose and meaning behind their lyrics before they begin writing.

The lesson examines a range of songwriting techniques, including repetition, rhyme and the placement of important words within a musical pulse. Pupils learn how repetition can strengthen a message, how rhyming words create cohesion and flow, and how emphasising key words on strong beats can make lyrics more impactful and memorable.

Children are encouraged to experiment with creating their own lyrics, exploring how simple, meaningful language can effectively communicate ideas and emotions. The video helps pupils develop an understanding of the relationship between words, rhythm and musical expression.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children explore songwriting, lyric writing and musical expression.
