Brush control

This Art and design video introduces the children to different ways of holding and using a paintbrush to create a variety of marks. Through clear demonstrations, the children learn how to adjust their grip, control the amount of paint on their brush and vary their movements to create dots, outlines, dabs and long, sweeping brushstrokes.

The video encourages the children to experiment with pressure, movement and brush control, exploring how different techniques affect the marks they create. Inspired by the work of Alma Thomas, the children discover how to use colourful brushstrokes to fill circular shapes with different marks, developing confidence and control while exploring their own creative ideas.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Art and design painting videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge as they help children explore creative techniques and express their ideas through art.
