Walter Tull: footballer and soldier

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow History scheme of work. It tells the inspiring story of Walter Tull, who grew up dreaming of playing football and went on to do something even more remarkable.

Walter became one of the first black footballers in England, playing for Tottenham Hotspur. Later, during the First World War, he joined the army and became the first black officer to lead soldiers into battle. He was known for his bravery, leadership and kindness. Walter Tull’s story shows how one person can break barriers and make history by being determined, courageous and proud of who they are.
