Walter Tull: footballer and soldier

In this History video, the children learn about the extraordinary life of Walter Tull, whose determination and strength of character helped him overcome significant barriers.

Growing up with a dream of playing football, Walter became one of the first black professional footballers in England, representing Tottenham Hotspur. The video then follows his role in the First World War, where he joined the army and became the first black officer to lead soldiers into battle. Celebrated for his bravery, leadership and kindness, Walter Tull’s story helps the children understand how individuals can challenge inequality and make history through courage and perseverance.

This video is part of the Kapow Primary Remembrance collection. It helps the children link Walter Tull’s story to the wider themes of remembrance, encouraging reflection on courage, sacrifice and the importance of honouring those who overcame injustice to serve with dignity.
