Respecting the river Ganges

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It shares a personal reflection on the River Ganges, or Maa Ganga Ji, which many people consider the most sacred and spiritual river in the world. The speaker describes visiting the river’s source in the Himalayan mountains and explains how important it is in Hindu belief, especially during festivals like Kumbh Mela.

Even as a non-Hindu, the speaker feels deep respect for the river, calling it Maa, meaning mother, to show reverence. They describe how people gather to bathe in the river, believing it washes away negative karma and brings purity. After taking a dip, the speaker feels clean inside and out. Many people collect Ganga water to take home, showing the river’s lasting importance in their daily lives.

Religion and worldviews, key stage 2, Year 5, Why are some places in the world significant to believers? Lesson 4: How can a river be a goddess?
