Ranjit Singh and the Sikh Empire

In this History video, the children explore the life and leadership of Ranjit Singh, who became the first Maharaja of the Sikh Empire. At a time when Punjab was divided into twelve different Sikh groups called Misls, Ranjit Singh had the vision to unite them. Using clever strategies, strong leadership and peaceful agreements, he brought them together to create a powerful empire. He was known for his bravery, fairness and for treating everyone equally, regardless of religion.

The children learn how Ranjit Singh ruled from 1801 until his death in 1839, making Lahore his capital and turning it into a bustling centre of trade, culture and learning. His strong army protected the empire, while his fair and wise leadership kept peace across the region. Ranjit Singh’s story demonstrates how unity, respect and thoughtful leadership can create lasting change.

This video is part of our cultural history resources. It supports the children in exploring the importance of leadership, diplomacy and fairness, encouraging reflection on how historical figures can influence communities, society and the wider world.
