Developing ideas into a finished watercolour artwork

This Art and design video shows the children how to use their painted studies as inspiration when creating a larger abstract composition. Drawing on ideas developed in their sketchbooks and experimental paintings, the children learn to select and combine effective colours, textures and techniques to create their own final artwork.

The video encourages the children to make thoughtful, creative decisions throughout the painting process, adapting and refining ideas rather than copying a single study. They also discover that watercolour can produce unexpected effects and are encouraged to respond creatively, using these moments as opportunities to develop texture, colour and expression in their finished piece.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Art and design painting videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge as they help children explore creative techniques and express their ideas through art.
