Techniques to strengthen papier-mâché helmets

This Design and technology video teaches the pupils how to strengthen their papier-mâché helmets once dry. It explains how adding more layers can thicken thinner areas and how cross-layering strips improves strength. The video introduces additional techniques, such as using card to support weak spots, rolling strips to reinforce the rim or adding an outer card shell. It also highlights how lightweight fillers like cotton wool can provide both support and comfort. The pupils are encouraged to think like designers, choosing the most effective methods to strengthen their helmets and make them better suited for their purpose.

This video is part of the Year 4, Structures: Helmets unit. It gives pupils clear strategies to improve and adapt their shell structures, building confidence in evaluating and refining their designs.
