Learn British Sign Language: Hedgehog

In this Geography video, the children learn the British Sign Language (BSL) sign for hedgehog. The children are shown that this involves holding one hand in a fist to represent the hedgehog’s body. With the other hand, they spread their fingers out like spiky hedgehog quills and place them above the fist.

The video is part of an optional Geography sustainability lesson in which the children explore different animal habitats, such as ponds, logpiles and nests. They identify which animals live in each habitat. As they watch, the children are encouraged to make the sign for the animal they think belongs in each place.

The hedgehog sign helps the children recognise that hedgehogs live on land and have special features for walking and protection. This short clip supports learning through movement and observation, helping to reinforce understanding of animals and their homes.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Geography Sustainability collection. It supports discussions about how creating animal homes can help look after the environment.
