Exploring materials and properties
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. Some things we see and touch are called objects – like a table, a book, or a building brick – and all objects are made from different materials. Wood comes from trees, plastic is made in factories, and fabric is woven from threads. Glass is made by melting sand at very high temperatures, and metal is taken from rocks deep in the Earth.
Materials can be described by their properties. Some are waterproof, meaning they stop water getting through. Others are absorbent and soak up liquids. Some, like glass, are transparent, which means we can see through them. Objects are made from materials that suit their job. So keep exploring the materials all around you – what are they made from, and what useful properties can you spot?
The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Key stage 1, Year 1, Materials: Everyday materials, Lesson 4: Is it absorbent?
