What animal poo can tell us

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science – Animals including humans scheme of work. It explores how the poo (and pellets) left behind by different animals reveal clues about their diets and teeth.

From foxes with seeds and beetle parts in their droppings to watery bird poo containing seeds and berry colour, each example shows whether the animal is a herbivore, carnivore, or omnivore. Fossilised ichthyosaur poo shows evidence of ancient fish- and squid-eating habits, while hedgehogs, cows, elephants, wombats, tigers, otters, and even owls (with their regurgitated pellets) demonstrate how diet is linked to teeth shape and digestive processes. The video ends by encouraging pupils to think about what their own poo might reveal about what they eat.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, key stage 2, Year 4, Animals including humans: Digestion and food, Lesson 6: Poo clues
