What’s my bike made of?

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Science scheme of work. Can you ride a bike? It’s great fun to cycle through the countryside, but have you ever wondered what materials bikes are made from – and why? Each part of a bike is made from a material chosen for its special properties.

The frame is made from strong, stiff metal to hold everything in place and support a person’s weight. The seat has soft foam inside to make it comfortable, and leather on the outside to make it tough and long-lasting. The tyres are made from rubber, which grips the ground and is elastic so it bounces back into shape. Reflectors are made from shiny plastic to keep riders safe by helping them be seen. So, what materials are the things around you made from – and why are they the right choice?

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Science, Key stage 1, Year 2, Materials: Uses of everyday materials, Lesson 2: Which material is suitable?
