A name for baby

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It explores how some people who follow the Hindu worldview welcome a new baby through a special naming ceremony called Namakarana. This event brings family and community together to celebrate the baby’s arrival and to choose a meaningful name.

Namakarana is more than just naming the baby. The time and date of birth are used to help pick the perfect name, and the baby’s father whispers it into their ear. The ceremony includes wishes for health and happiness and helps connect the baby to their Hindu community. It is a joyful time when loved ones gather to share hopes for the future.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Religion and worldviews, Key stage 1, Year 1, How do we know that new babies are special? Lesson 6: How are some babies named?
