How to make a mixed-media portrait
This Art and design video shows the children how to bring together ideas and techniques from across the unit to create a final mixed-media portrait that communicates something about their identity. The children learn how to review their earlier sketchbook experiments, decide on an artistic intent and select ideas and effects that work well together.
The video demonstrates how to use a quick sketch as a starting point before combining elements such as text, symbols, expressive brushstrokes and printmaking. The children are encouraged to build their portrait gradually, refer back to their sketchbooks and adapt their ideas as the artwork develops, helping them make purposeful artistic choices rather than trying to include every technique they have explored.
This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Art and design painting videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge as they help children explore artistic processes and communicate their ideas through art.
