Lighting candles to remember

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It explores how people from different beliefs use candles to remember others, reflect, and feel connected. Jewish people around the world light a special Yahrzeit candle that burns for 24 hours to remember loved ones who have died. It is often lit on the anniversary of their death or during holidays.

Christians also light candles, both in church and at home. Some light them to remember those who have died, others to pray for people in need or to feel close to God. The meaning of a candle can change depending on where it is lit — at home, in a place of worship, or during a special time. People from religious and non-religious backgrounds may light candles to mark important moments, to feel hope, or simply to keep someone’s memory alive.
