The story of Sikh courage
This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow Religion and worldviews scheme of work. It is designed for pupils and tells the story of Guru Arjan and Guru Hargobind, two important Sikh figures. Guru Arjan built the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) in Amritsar as a place of worship for all. He refused to change his faith and was arrested, remaining peaceful and faithful until his death, which is why Sikhs honour him as a martyr. Guru Hargobind, his son, became the next guru and believed in both spiritual and physical strength. He formed the first Sikh army, always guided by compassion. When wrongly imprisoned, he helped 52 innocent prisoners gain freedom by wearing a cloak with 52 tassels so they could all be released together. His return is still celebrated during the Sikh festival of Bandi Chhor Divas, which means ‘Day of Liberation’.
The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of Religion and worldviews, Upper key stage 2, Year 5, *Updated* Why do people have to stand up for what the believe in? Lesson 3: How can light represent standing up for what you believe in?
