The story of Ra

This Kapow pupil video is part of the Kapow History scheme of work. It introduces you to the ancient Egyptian creation story and the powerful gods and goddesses they believed in. At the beginning of time, there was only dark water, called Nun. Out of it rose a hill named Ben-Ben, and on top stood the first god, Atum. He created Shu, the god of air, and Tefnut, the goddess of moisture. Their children were Geb, the god of the earth, and Nut, the goddess of the sky.

Geb and Nut had four children: Osiris, Isis, Seth, and Nephthys. Osiris was a good and kind ruler, but his jealous brother Seth killed him to become king. Osiris’s son, Horus, later defeated Seth and became king, while Osiris became ruler of the underworld. The Egyptians believed Ra, also known as Atum, was the sun god and the creator of everything. He carried the sun across the sky each day and was shown with a falcon head and a shining disc. Other gods, like Sekhmet, the lion-headed goddess of war and healing, also played important roles. These stories helped explain how the world began and what the Egyptians believed about life, death, and the gods.

The video is designed to be shown to pupils as part of History, Lower key stage 2, Year 3, *New* What was important to ancient Egyptians? Lesson 4: What do sources suggest about religious beliefs in ancient Egypt?
