Exploring the traditional dragon dance

This Music video introduces Year 4 pupils to the sights and sounds of the traditional Chinese dragon dance. Through vibrant footage of dragon dancers, musicians and Lunar New Year celebrations, children experience how music, movement and performance come together to tell a story and bring communities together.

The video helps pupils become familiar with the energetic rhythms, instruments and movements associated with the dragon dance. As they watch, children are encouraged to notice how the music matches the dragon’s actions, creating excitement, atmosphere and a sense of celebration that will inspire their own musical ideas.

The footage provides inspiration for pupils’ own compositions by helping them make connections between music, storytelling and movement. By listening carefully and observing the performance, children begin to explore how rhythm and melody can be used to represent characters, actions and emotions in music.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Music videos, which support teachers in developing confidence and subject knowledge when helping children compose creatively and explore how music can communicate mood, movement and character.
