Introducing places of worship in Years 1 and 2

This Religion and worldviews unit overview video supports teachers delivering Kapow’s unit, Where do some people talk to God? It explains how the lessons help children explore different places of worship and understand how beliefs can be expressed through prayer, objects, actions and special spaces.

The video outlines the key themes covered across the unit, including Muslim, Christian and Sikh worldviews, prayer, community and the features found in places of worship. Teachers are guided in helping children recognise that people within the same religion or worldview may pray in different ways, at different times and in different places.

The video also explores how children learn to compare places of worship and think about why certain places, objects and actions are important to believers. It highlights age-appropriate ways to discuss similarities and differences between worldviews while encouraging respectful and inclusive attitudes towards beliefs and traditions.

This video also offers guidance for addressing misconceptions and supporting thoughtful discussion, including using a wonder box, making links to children’s own experiences and adapting learning to reflect locally represented worldviews and places of worship.
