Our approach to the mixed-age Spanish curriculum
This printable PDF document provides a detailed overview of Kapow Primary’s Spanish mixed-age scheme of work, designed to support mixed-age settings arranged into Y3/4 and Y5/6 classes.
The plan organises D&T units into a rolling two-year programme across KS2, with Cycle A and Cycle B units taught alternatively. This allows teachers to confidently deliver a mixed-age Spanish scheme aligned with the National curriculum.
What does Kapow Primary’s Spanish mixed-age plan contain?
The plan outlines the progression of skills and knowledge in Spanish, ensuring that pupils build upon their learning each year in a spiral curriculum.
It covers the statutory requirements of the National curriculum, details the Spanish skills and knowledge taught and offers guidance on primary Spanish assessment and implementing the mixed-age scheme.
How does Kapow Primary’s Spanish scheme develop knowledge and skills?
This document provides a suggested long-term plan for mixed-age year groups, ensuring a clear pathway for pupil learning. Progression is broken down into the following key areas:
- Phonics – becoming familiar with key Spanish phonemes, spelling and pronunciation.
- Vocabulary – introducing commonly-used words; memorising high-frequency keywords.
- Grammar – systematically learning Spanish grammar and applying it in a variety of contexts; practising grammar structures in speaking, writing, reading and listening activities.
- Language comprehension (listening and reading) – applying knowledge of phonics, vocabulary and grammar; decoding what the children hear and read more accurately and efficiently using a range of strategies.
- Language production (speaking and writing) – applying what the children have learnt across other knowledge strands to speak and write in Spanish.
- Cultural awareness – learning about Spanish food, celebrations, festivals, art and Spanish-speaking countries around the world.
