Pupils should be able to recognise the interplay between the two types of knowledge. The ‘Science in action’ strand provides them with this opportunity by illustrating how scientists have worked in the past and continue to do so today. This approach enhances pupils’ understanding of how some of the substantive knowledge they learn was developed.
