Introducing HTML

This Computing scheme of work video introduces pupils to HTML—HyperText Markup Language—the code that builds and organises websites. It helps pupils understand how web pages are created and what goes on behind the scenes of websites.

The video explains that HTML is a text-based programming language made up of tags—special words and symbols that tell the computer where to place text, pictures and videos. While we can’t normally see HTML, it’s working in the background every time we read, watch or click on a website.

Pupils are shown how to explore real HTML using the Inspect tool in their browser, lifting the curtain to see the hidden code behind any part of a webpage. This hands-on skill makes the invisible visible and encourages curiosity about how the internet works.

This video is part of Kapow Primary’s Year 4 Skills showcase: HTML unit. It introduces foundational web development concepts in an accessible way, supporting pupils to explore, understand and appreciate the building blocks of the digital world around them.
