Creating shapes for 3D designs

This Design and technology scheme of work video shows the children how to create starting shapes for 3D model designs, helping them understand what is realistic and achievable for their own products. It demonstrates how to cut, fold and stick nets to form cuboids, cubes and triangular prisms using materials such as cardboard, art straws, modelling clay and sticky tape. The children see how to use simple tools including scissors, a ruler and a pencil, and how scoring can help achieve neat folds.

The video illustrates each modelling step clearly so the children feel confident and well prepared to begin designing and making their own 3D products in the lesson and unit below.
